The Central Bank of Guyana began operations on October 16, 1965, shortly before Guyana gained independence from Britain in 1966. It was established under the Bank of Guyana Ordinance 1965, replacing the British Guiana Currency Board. The Governor of the Bank of Guyana is Dr Gobind Ganga, appointed on December 2, 2014.
